Summer Reading Programs kicking off this week

In the month of April, in preparation for this year’s Summer Reading Program, the Beresford Public Library ran a bookmark contest. The theme was the summer reading theme, “Color Our World.” There were 26 entries in the bookmark contest. The winners of each age group will have their winning designed turned into a bookmark for the summer program (they also received a Casey’s gift card). The winners were (left to right): 4th-5th Grade: Vera; 6-8th Grade: Ojala; and 9th-12th: Bridget. Congratulations, students (photos/provided).

With school out, summer fun is beginning, and for area youth and families, that fun includes time spent at the local public library reading and participating in a variety of activities.
Area libraries kicked off their summer reading programs this week. Here’s a look at what’s planned. It’s not too late to get involved in the fun!

Alcester
Summer Reading programming began at the Alcester Library this week with a visit from ventriloquist James Wedgewood on Tuesday. If you missed this fun event, area kids still have time to get involved as the program continues through the end of June. The program is geared at kids going into 1st grade through 6th grade.
“Kids in the Summer Reading Program who track their reading minutes can earn up to five books if they read at least 500 minutes,” said Paige German, who is running the program in Alcester. “There are also over 25 raffle prizes kids can earn. They earn a raffle ticket for every 100 minutes they read. Some of the raffle prizes are lego sets, art sets, a squishmellow, mini karaoke machine, Lite Brite, and more!”
Special Summer Reading programming will occur each Tuesday in June at 1 p.m. All are invited. A particularly exciting program will take place this coming Tuesday, June 3, when Magician Jonathan May visits the library. Don’t miss this! The event is open to all ages, not just those in the program.
In addition to the Summer Reading program, the library will also offer story time on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. through the end of June.
“Storytime is geared at kids 3-5 years of age, but younger and older kids are always welcome,” said German.
Enrich your brain this summer by reading!
Beresford
The theme of the Summer Reading Program at the Beresford Public Library this year is “Color Our World.”
“The Beresford library invites people of all ages to embark on a journey of art and creativity with us this summer at the library!” said Annie Crist, Beresford Children’s Librarian. “We’ve designed programs to inspire and engage readers of all ages through different art programs. We will be having performers, reading challenges, activities, prizes and fun to help keep the kids engaged in meaningful and fun experiences.”
Beresford’s Summer Reading Program kicks off tonight, Thursday, May 29, at 6:30 p.m. with a “Messtival Festival.” Come ready to get messy with paint and water!
The program will run until July 10th, when the Readers Reward Party will be held.
Don’t miss all kinds of activities and fun in the summer reading program.
The library is also running a Summer Reading Challenge for four different age groups: Pre-K; Children; Teens; and Adults. Raffle prizes and other incentives will be available through this challenge. Take up the challenge and read this summer!
This year, activity will be tracked through an app called Reader Zone. To join, area residents should find the app on your device, install it, make an account, then join the Beresford program by entering this code: cdc14.
Reading and logging of minutes began this Monday, May 26, but readers can join and get started any time.
Follow the library on Facebook for details or stop in to pick up a calendar of events.
