The Alcester-Hudson Cubs had a come-from-behind win on Thursday, Oct. 30, at home against the Platte-Geddes Black Panthers in quarterfinal action of the high school playoffs. The Cubs defeated the Panthers 24-20 to advance to the semi-finals this Friday, Nov. 7.
In the first quarter of the game, Darin Dykstra scored a TD on a three-yard path from Tommy Walth. A three-yard rush from Dykstra then moved the score to 8-0, but Platte-Geddes quickly answered with a 50-yard rush TD of their own for a first quarter ending score of 8-6, Cubs.
In the second quarter, the Cubs struggled to add to their score. Platte-Geddes added a TD and conversion to bring the game to a half-time standing of 14-8, Platte-Geddes in the lead.
Neither team scored in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Platte-Geddes added another touchdown, bringing the score to 20-8. The Cubs then took charge. Dykstra rushed for an 11-yard TD, moving the score to 14-20, Platte-Geddes still leading. He added two on the conversion, and then Tommy Walth followed it up with a five-yard rush TD to push the Cubs ahead 22-20. Jacob Cole completed scoring for the Cubs by catching a three-yard pass from Walth to move the final score to 24-20, Cubs.
The Cubs now move on in the quest to go to the Dome. The Cubs will host semi-final action at home Friday, Nov. 7. Come cheer on the Cubs at 7 p.m. as they take on Howard.
Defensive leaders for last week’s quarterfinal game against Platte-Geddes were Karzen Sommerovld with 7.5 tackles and Ethan Brown and Jackson Meyer with 6.5 tackles each.
