This year, The Republic newspaper and our sister publication The New Era, are teaming together to raise cancer awareness. Six times this year, these publications will shine the spotlight on various aspects of cancer in a special series that appears in this edition of the paper and then again in March, May, July, September, and October.

Our first spotlight is happening in conjunction with World Cancer Day, which happens mext week, on Feb. 4, and is meant to unite victims and bring advocates together to empower and spread awareness about cancer.

Globally, cancer is a leading cause of death, with approximately 20 million new cases and 9.7 million deaths globally attributed to it, according to the World Cancer Organization.

The most frequently diagnosed cancers worldwide include breast, lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer, but there are many other types of cancers that individuals fight.

In this month’s spotlight, we take a look at the cancers represented by the 27 ribbons that line the pages inside. Turn to pages 6-7 to read more.
