James Thomas Ekren, born June 30, 1947, in Akron, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the age of 77.

He was raised on his family’s farm south of Alcester, South Dakota, where he attended Nora Country School and graduated from Alcester High School in 1966. From a young age, James found joy in the outdoors—spending many of his happiest days hunting, fishing, and exploring nature.

He later relocated to Arizona, where he met Donna Van Sickle, whom he married on October 23, 1982. He was the father of Charity (Kevin) Archer of Sioux City, Iowa, Leslie (Jeff) Johnson of Jefferson, South Dakota, and Thomas (Allison) Ekren of Gilbert, Arizona.

He was a proud grandfather of Carter, Jacob, and Miles Herrity; Quinn, Izzy, and Eli Connors; and Bridget and Amelia Ekren. James is also survived by his sister, Glenice (Larry) Pilla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Evelyn Ekren.

In addition to his love of the outdoors, James enjoyed carpentry and gunsmithing—hobbies that reflected his craftsmanship and careful workmanship. James will be remembered for his warmth, his subtle sense of humor, and his lifelong devotion to the New York Yankees.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Roseni Lutheran Church, Beresford, SD, on October 19, 2025, at 1:00 PM, with burial to follow at Nora Cemetery.
