Odell LaVerne Olsen was born on April 16, 1944, in Beresford, SD, to Odell and Evelyn Olsen. He passed away on August 6, 2025, at age 81.
Odell attended Gothland rural school and graduated from Beresford High School. He then farmed with his father for 1 year. In July 1963, Odell joined the Navy, his second love of his life. He attained the rank of E-9 and Chief of the Board (COB). On October 28, 1963, he married Eileen, the love of his life. They were married for 61 years. While in the Navy, for almost 30 years, he rode 8 Submarines and helped build the Banger, WA, Subbase. He started his career in the nuclear engineering field, and the last part of his time was as the chief of the boat. Odell’s last command was at the submarine training center as the Command Master Chief, retiring June 30, 1992. After Odell’s Navy retirement, he worked at Fort Stewart Army Base School system in the building maintenance field. He retired fully in March of 2008. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his grandkids and wife.
Odell was a member of VFW, American Legion, Submarine Veterans, and of the Holland Club he enjoyed furniture refinishing and carpentry and making crafts with his wife. He attended Countryside Baptist Church and loved going to Southern Gospel Concerts. Odell loved GOD, his country, and his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Eileen Olsen; his children, Robin Decker-Une (Johnny), Justin Olsen (Barbara); his 5 grandchildren, Brisco Olsen (Madison), Ashley Decker, Austin Decker, Tabitha Olsen, Delmer Olsen; and his 2 great grandchildren, Ivy and Fidelia Decker.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Odell L. Olsen (Tinker).
