If you knew him, you probably didn’t call him James. You called him Jim—or better yet, Nerf. A man of deep faith, quick wit, a great sense of humor, and a big heart, Jim Messler passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the age of 72, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
Jim was born on New Year’s Day in 1953 in Beresford, South Dakota, to Ray and Avis (Newbold) Messler. He was the second of four spirited boys—Leon, Calvin, and Ed being his lifelong band of brothers. The Messlers were an active crew at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where Jim was baptized and confirmed. His faith remained a cornerstone throughout his life.
In high school at BHS, Jim balanced sports and music like a pro—football, wrestling, track, and chorus all four years. His adventurous side made an appearance on a memorable 50-mile canoe trip in Manitoba, Canada with friends—because why not paddle through the wilderness for fun?
Jim attended the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1978 with a Degree of Associate of Liberal Arts. He worked in Sioux City and Elk Point before returning to his hometown of Beresford, where he found long-term roles at Showplace, Inc. and Truck Towne. He gave four decades of dependable work—and probably a few jokes along the way.
Even during tough times, Jim never lost his warmth. He was a beacon of kindness, humor, and creativity. Whether it was his unique “picture” cards with colorful markers and uplifting Bible verses or his love for darts, pool, and spontaneous conversations, Jim had a knack for making people smile. If you got a phone call from Jim, you likely hung up feeling better than when you picked up.
He faced several serious health challenges with courage, resilience, and grace—recuperating from a five-month hospital stay and later enjoying time at Aspire Skilled Nursing in Lake Park, Iowa. He filled his days there with his trademark artwork and chats with friends and family. When Aspire closed, he moved to Pillar Care Center, where he passed on to his eternal home.
Jim’s faith was strong, and his spirit even stronger. Though we feel the sadness of his passing, we also celebrate the joy of his new life in Heaven—surrounded by loved ones and finally at peace.
Jim is survived by his beloved mother Avis; his brothers Leon (Marlene Block) of Tea, SD; Ed (Karyn); and sister-in-law Bremie (wife of Cal, who preceded him in death). He is fondly remembered by nieces Shannon and Abbey; nephews Joshua, Robert (Rebecca), and Thomas; as well as many cherished cousins. He was greeted in Heaven by his father Ray and brother Cal.
A graveside burial service for family and friends will be held at 10:00 AM on July 22, 2025, at Dalesburg Lutheran Cemetery, 30701-30709 464th Ave, Centerville, SD 57014. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 AM at Wass Funeral Home, 301 N 3rd Street, Beresford, SD 57004. Come share memories, a few laughs, and honor a life well lived.
