Carol Ann Vander Laan entered Heaven on May 29, 2025, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 84. She was born on September 28, 1940, on the family farm near Beresford in Lincoln County, South Dakota, to Everett and Nora (Moore) Bonine.
Carol attended Pioneer School and graduated from Beresford High School before continuing her education at Morningside College. She later worked at Home Federal Bank in Sioux Falls. On May 20, 1961, she married the love of her life, Louis Vander Laan, at the Beresford United Methodist Church. Together they built a life of faith, family, and service, raising three children: Sheri, Shirley, and Todd.
Carol was deeply committed to her community. She was a longtime 4-H leader, served on school and township election boards, and was an active member of the Friendly Few Extension Club for many years. A lifelong member of Beresford Zion United Methodist Church, Carol taught Sunday School and served faithfully on various committees.
She had a green thumb and loved to garden. She also enjoyed sewing, driving truck during silage season, and never passed up a good card game—especially with her card club of over 50 years. Carol and Louis rarely missed an activity or event involving their kids or grandkids—they were their biggest fans.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents Everett and Nora, and her brother, Billy.
Grateful to have shared her life are her husband of 64 years, Louis; her daughters, Sheri (Randy) Meister of Sioux Falls and Shirley (Joe) Dudak of Crowley, TX; her son, Todd (Mary) Vander Laan of Beresford; six grandchildren, Chelsea Meister and Katie Meister of Sioux Falls, Hannah Dudak of Alexandria, VA, Jackson Dudak of Bozeman, MT, Maggie Vander Laan and Levi (Payleen) Vander Laan of Beresford; three great-granddaughters, Nora, Wesley, and Charlee Vander Laan; sister-in-law Mary (Darryl) Bertsch of Kansas City, MO; two nieces; and many extended family and friends.
