Cubs preparing for a great season

After graduating nine seniors from last year’s Cubs volleyball squad, this year’s Cubs volleyball team will include a lot of new faces. The team is excited to come together to step onto the court to fight for the win.

“This group of girls are very hardworking and determined and we are looking forward to see how they play together!” said Head Coach Keandra Rhead, who is back to coach A-H volleyball this year after a one-year hiatus from the role. “I am excited to see how this team steps up to the plate.”

The varsity will be led by seniors Anna Oberg, Kayleah Peterson, Delta Pies, Heidi Swanson, and Lauren Meier. Joining them are juniors Paxtyn Moller, Ines Garcia Del Campo, Ayonna Schissel, Emily Winquist, Emma Solberg, and Sydney Keiser.

Last year, the Cubs made it to the Region 4 Quarterfinal and ended the season 8-20. This year, Rhead is hoping to improve this record, but it will be a challenge.

“With last year’s senior class being as large as it was, there’s a lot of big shoes to fill,” she said. “I suspect that our biggest challenge this year will be working through all of these changes and getting used to playing with a whole new team.”

So far, the team has been navigating the challenge beautifully.

“We have five seniors this year and they have all done a great job at stepping up to the plate and trying to fill the leadership role after losing such a large group of seniors,” she said. “I think that I see a lot of leaders in the senior and junior class. It’s hard to pinpoint just a couple.”

The team may be new in working together on the court, but they already possess a great team mindset, says Rhead.

“They are strong and working hard and asking questions to improve and be the best players that they can be,” she said. “I am really looking forward to working with such a dedicated group of girls!”

This year’s Assistant Coach for Cubs volleyball is Alexis Gray, a member of the A-H Class of 2024.

“We are excited to have her back!” said Rhead.

Good luck, Cubs!
